#ICP AI 🧠update: the promised smart contract performing fully on-chain facial recognition is now working. A video, and GitHub repo, is coming soon.
Again, the Internet Computer is demonstrating that blockchain built using the most advanced computer science has no limits.
The Internet Computer is the only blockchain that has ever run AI as a smart contract, fully on-chain, where the AI becomes tamperproof and unstoppable, and can optionally be made autonomous.
The network is the product of more than 1000 person-years of R&D effort, and is the only 3rd generation blockchain in production today, but we hope others will follow.
We are proud it hosts AI smart contracts, because it helps reveal the true potential of blockchain.
The Internet Computer community has never needed to overload the word "on." We do big things, on-chain, for real. ICP smart contracts create interactive user experiences, and can even host social networks, and all their data and computation (if you're new, see http://oc.app).
In "full stack decentralization," we build without need for current IT, like AWS, on which much of Web3 still depends today (the Internet Computer network's nodes don't run there either). With 3rd generation blockchain, it's not just tokens and DeFi on-chain, but everything. It's a complete new stack.
Users directly interact with smart contracts, not a website in the cloud, and transactions are seamless compute, occurring without a wallet in the way (although, smart contracts can provide wallet functionality, as per http://OISY.com, and traditional wallets like Plug work too)
I reiterate my sincere belief in "blockchain singularity." Blockchain will become the platform of choice for building a majority of applications, because it solves for cybersecurity – since even if an application has tokens inside, if it genuinely runs fully on-chain, it can run safely without the unreliable protection of cybersecurity systems like firewalls and anti-malware. And in the field of Web3, applications can run under the direct, exclusive, and fully-automated control of DAOs, giving communities genuine ownership and power, removing the need to trust intermediaries.
Uniquely, the Internet Computer hosts smart contracts that can pay for their own computation, create interactive web experiences, store and process huge amounts of data, and run sophisticated AI.
But, as some have complained, while there are 300+ tokens listed under CMC's "AI and big data" tab:
- ICP is absent, while
- none of the tokens actually listed involve blockchains that can run AI or store and process big data.
And big media stays quiet.
That's because today blockchain is often about narratives that sell tokens, while we want it to be about technology. That's ok.
Today, networks align themselves with AGI narratives, without even being able to run a simple neural network.
We will just continue working to deliver LLM smart contracts as fast as possible, building on the 1000+ years of R&D that has taken ICP this far in the first place.
We aim to remain the standard bearer, but still wish all blockchains pivoting into AI the best of luck.
I applaud the incredible work of the many who have taken ICP this far, and will take us into the future. We will remain defined by advanced computer science and engineering – and continue pursuing our aim to enable a "blockchain singularity" by delivering game-changing technical advances.
Of course, we also hope the narratives will clear, just as they did after the Dot Com boom and bust, so our industry can refocus on substance. We wish to accelerate that.
In the pipeline we have developments that will shock the system. Those are some words worth remembering. What you see now is just the beginning in the fields of AI – especially – but also multi-chain and many other things.
Looking forward to sharing facial recognition. It's the first next step.
